Blackstrap Molasses... a health gem in your kitchen

Blackstrap Molasses...who knew?

My grandparents used molasses all the time... on biscuits, usually. You may be surprised to find that blackstrap molasses (BSM) are a powerhouse of nutrition.

What is the difference between BSM and 'regular' molasses? Well, regular molasses are the product of the first and second boiling of cane sugar.  BSM come from the third boiling. Something amazing happens during the third boil that intensifies the powerful properties of this superfood.

You'll probably be surprised at all the nutrients in BSM:

  • Iron -- a great remedy if you're anemic. BSM contains a great deal of very bioavailable iron; and unlike iron supplements, BSM will not cause constipation.  I have several patients with tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Sometimes tinnitus is caused by anemia; I often recommend a few weeks of taking BSM to see if it takes care of the ringing... it frequently does!
  • Minerals -- BSM has significant amounts of calcium, magnesium and potassium.  Great for people with muscle cramps, restless leg syndrome, etc.  Kids with autism metabolize through minerals more quickly than neurotypical kids...BSM is a great alternative to supplement tablets.
  • Antioxidants -- antioxidants find and remove toxins from the body.  BSM contain Manganese and Selenium, both powerful antioxidants.
  • Stool softeners -- if you struggle with constipation, a tablespoon of BSM daily will probably resolve it...and without any ugly side effects.
How do you take BSM? Shoot for one tablespoon per day. Some people LOVE the taste of BSM.  I find the taste to be distinct, and one that takes some getting used to.  If the flavor is too strong for you, or your child, there are a few options to consider:
  • mix with butter and spread on toast.
  • dissolve in a bit of hot water, then mix with milk and ice.
  • sneak it into a smoothie.
  • use it in Chai tea.
  • use it in recipes, like gingerbread, meatballs, etc.
  • google for more ideas!
As with most food choices, choose organic BSM; it's also best to choose a brand that is unsulfured.

Let me know what you think after you try it!
